from a recent email:

Sharing some of the tragic news from various Catholic institutions and communities.

This is the latest from a Canadian CSC in Haiti (I think she is the provincial there). A lot of other religious communities in the area really lost a lot of their members and their facilities.

Dear Sisters and friends,

The news I bring may be new to some and known by others, except for Christaine who received news of her sister and niece's death late this afternoon Like many others they had been missing since the earth quake. Pray for Chris, her sister, niece and her elderly mother.
Other confirmed news not good :
200 students and profs at the Salesian's school in PauP all perished in the collapse of their technical school.
300 students and teachers perished in the St. Gerard's Parish School. The Parish was also demolished.
The Daughters of Marie in Bel Air were 31, not 27 in their residence. Only 7 escaped. The Provincial was among the dead.
Three Daughters of Wisdom perished and three seriously injured.
Mgr. Kebreau's sister, Sr. Renee Kebeau also lost her life.
College Canado, Ecole St Jean run by the Sacred Heart Brothers, and Fameo Pereo Center run by Fr. Charlebois are all demolished. Fr, Charlebois is OK.
The Montfortain Fathers lost seven scholastics who came out of CIFOR, were in their vehicle ready to drive away when CIFOR collapsed and buried the vehicle.
A visiting Brazilian Animator or guest professor at CIFOR were also killed in the collapse of this same structure. The first gentleman is a brother of a Cardinal in Brazil.
The Brothers of Chrtian Instruction lost two brothers when part of their residence in Delmas was demolished, one immediately, another when he jumped from the second floor died the next day at Canape vert Hospital. Br. Joseph was also killed.
The Sisters of St.. Ann's dispensary & school in St. Antoine's Parish are gone plus two of their residences and damaged done to their school Esther on Turgeau and College Marie Anne at Bourdon.
The Sister of Charity of St. Louis' school - down.
There is only one Catholic Church standing in PauP, notre D'Alta grace on Delmas.
A very sad news for all of us, Marie Obin, who just underwent intensive chemiotherapy for breast cancer lost her son, John,John, who just graduated from University in Social Sciences and was recently employed in the Prison System. The house she was renting was also destroyed. Pray for Mary and her family.

Tomorrow I leave for Port-au-Prince to be a presence to the Sisters there who spent every night since the earthquake in the yard. They were advised not to return to the house until today. I had an Ingineer go and inspect it. He said there were no problems or cracks anywhere, probaly thanks to the "joints de dilation". I just love dilating joints even if they sometimes let water seep through.

A Holy Cross priest stopped in this afternoon. He arrived from Port-au-Prince yesterday. He said he could walk on the main street for blocks and blocks and look at the sea. That is how flattened the city is.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers and solidarity. We shed tears, we hurt, but know we are not alone. Many things will be changed forever but life will go on because we know we are loved by a Divine Presence in our midst.

With gratitude and affection,
Maureen
